“There are different ones. In the house on several different floors and my childrens books and some others in my studio-drawing space. All a bit small and difficult to take. I love my childhood books as they have a deep influence on me and then on my own children.There is a space for catalogues and then all over the place are littered always some books. I am not very tidy with it…all where. Beside I read Calvino in Italian and it is easy to read. His language is as you would say in German blumig- means flowering or something like that, very Tuscan. My mother said he writes as my father from Florence did speak. She too was pleased to read him in Italian (lingua toscana).”

” Today the 50th bookshelves,  i share the part of my bookshelf which belongs to Georges Perec books. How can i illustrate my preference for this author better than with his own explanation of arranging books!!! Vandaag, de 50ste bookshelves, deel ik graag het stukje boekenplank dat toebehoord aan Georges Perec. Hoe kan ik mijn voorliefde voor deze schrijver beter illustreren dan met een stuk tekst van de schrijver zelf over het ordenen van boeken!!!”

“Soms verdwijnen boeken tijdelijk uit mijn boekenkast en worden ze voorzien van allerlei kleuren Post-its met daarop aanwijzigingen, zodat ik snel de pagina terug kan vinden met iets van mijn gading. Ik ben momenteel met een monografie bezig, een net woord voor een boek over een onderwerp, in dit geval de laatmiddeleeuwse kunstenaar Geertgen tot Sin-Jans. Nadat ik een tentoonstelling heb gemaakt over deze kunstenaar had dit onderwerp me stevig te pakken. Intussen ben ik al zo’n vier jaar bezig aan het manuscript en is een flink aantal boeken tegen de poten van mijn tafel opgesteld. Ze lagen eerst op de tafel, maar zijn nu verhuisd naar beneden. Een tijdelijke boekenkast – zonder planken dat wel. Of je zou de vloer als een grote boekenplank moeten zien.”

“I don’t have purpose built shelves. Each one of my seven shelves is different. The reason being that they have all been salvaged from the streets where I live, Kings Cross, the most densely populated postcode in Australia, sited on top of a hill at the edge of Sydney CBD, that once hosted many windmills. Further, I can’t take a collective picture of them as they exist in different parts of the small apartment that I share with Nyree and our son Jasper. Naturally some of the books belong to them.

bs#47This is my favourite shelf. If I was forced at gunpoint to choose one name only, it would be Samuel Beckett, and if further pushed to select one work, it would have to be the play without words titled:

Act Without Words I – A mime for one player

I know of no other single work that depicts the human condition more fully. It was originally written in French in 1956, with music by his cousin John Beckett. Here I have the english translation in the book titled Samuel Beckett – The Complete Dramatic Works. It is amusing to suggest that a play without words is written … but of course in his case much of his dramatic works reside in his very precisely and crisply worded, propped and timed directions, which here total only three pages.

I really do see him as a visual artist. After having read his plays I now refuse to see any adaptations no matter how accomplished the direction or actors. This since he has already managed to plant, and with my help give form to, his suggestions directly in my mind. I’m just terrified of tainting those arrived at images in my head.”

“De twee bovenste planken van de Joyce-kast bevatten voornamelijk de vertalingen van Ulysses die ik de afgelopen jaren heb verzameld. Van links naar rechts, van boven naar beneden…: Duits, Spaans, Roemeens, Servisch, Deens, Frans, Servisch (nieuwe vertaling), Spaans (eerdere vertaling), Hongaars, Noors, Italiaans, Tsjechisch, Ivriet, Chinees, Frans (o nee: dat moet de Franse vertaling van Finnegans Wake zijn), Japans, Portugees, Zweeds, Japans (Manga), Russisch, Servisch (nog een nieuwe vertaling; iemand geïnteresseerd?), Frans, Iers (‘Circe’, episode 15), Catelaans (‘Ithaca’, episode 17, fragment), IJslands, Gronings (fragmenten van diverse episodes, vertaling Henk Scholte)– vervolgens een vreemde eend: de editie van Ulysses verzorgd door Danis Rose (gesigneerd door Rose met de handtekening van Joyce) – Nederlands (John Vandenbergh), Nederlands (Paul Claes en Mon Nys), Nederlands (Erik Bindervoet en Robbert-Jan Henkes) – om af te sluiten met een eerste druk, 7e drukgang van de Shakespeare & Co.-editie, de tweede, herziene ‘Gabler-editie’ en de Odyssey Press-editie, twee deeltjes, Hamburg 1932 van Ulysses.”

“Ik heb het grootste deel van onze boekenkasten zelf gemaakt. Zo konden we heel eenvoudig hoge kasten krijgen met lage, smalle plankruimte, waarin je veel meer boeken kwijt kunt terwijl je meer vloer overhoudt. Omdat we de afgelopen jaren diverse malen zijn verhuisd staan onze boeken nogal ongeordend door elkaar. Ik breng veel te veel tijd door met het zoeken naar boeken die ik soms pas vind als ik ze opnieuw heb gekocht in de overtuiging dat ze ergens onderweg verloren zijn geraakt. Ik moet eens een paar dagen nemen om ze te herschikken. Nu zet ik zo af en toe een stukje bij elkaar.”

 

bs#44“Hier staat Virginia Woolf al zo’n beetje op orde. Mijn eerste boekvertaling omvatte haar brieven aan Vita Sackville-West, die vooral in deel drie van de verzamelde brieven staan. Dat is er zodoende behoorlijk slecht aan toe. Toen ik het boek vertaald had (1996) heb ik jarenlang niets van haar gelezen, maar nu keer ik weer regelmatig naar haar terug.”

“De boeken waar ik het meeste plezier aan beleef – naast Nederlandse literatuur – gaan over de betrekkingen op allerlei gebied tussen Nederland en Rusland van de 16e eeuw tot heden. Ze staan op de meest toegankelijke planken van mijn boekenkast en ik  kan het verzamelen ervan niet laten.”
